Names are signs that denote the person or thing they refer to, present them to the world around them and associate the name with its referent. Furthermore, the relation a certain name and the person/thing it refers to evokes positive or negative connotations as well. There are names that one does not like simply because they relate these names to certain referents and tend to attach a negative connotation to them because of the people who bear them.

Over the last decades, naming traditions have changed considerably, especially in Bulgaria, old names have been left behind and new, modern ones, have substituted them. The abundance of names has shaped the name stock in a quite new and different way. If, for example, 20 years ago, double first names were not commonly used, nowadays we witness three-component forenames, names consisting only of two vowels, foreign names incorporated in the naming systems, a variety of surname structures, etc
